The definition of the word ‘gynarchy’ on this blog has the disclaimer that ‘gynarchy used as a noun is very rare’. While certainly the word is not as widespread as it perhaps should be, this should not be taken as a suggestion that the concept of gynarchy is not commonplace, or at least has not been throughout history.
I don’t subscribe to the viewpoint that a woman in charge automatically makes things better-look at Sarah Palin, for example. However, I do believe it is certainly the case that women do have an innate talent for handling power that a man simply cannot possess, a talent that makes us better suited to political leadership.
How did we get this ability? Ironically enough, through subjugation.
For many years women were severely limited in the power they could hold, being focused primarily on the household. Even then, we were not in total control-men were still considered the head of the household. But we took pride in the power we had, and always made the most of it, finding ways around its limitations and working the system so that we were always in control. Men, by contrast, have always had power. It’s something they assume to have, something taken for granted, and not something they have spent centuries trying to understand and expand upon. They don’t need to get creative, or even think that much about it-it’s just there.
It’s the difference between being an expert sharpshooter with a pistol and owning a bazooka. Both gets results, but one is so much more refined and elegant-so much more impressive to behold.
I’m aware that some may find this argument simplistic, and no doubt there are many holes in it. It’s a little difficult to try and actually make an argument as to why women should rule, because it seems so obvious as to not need explanation. Of course, my background may have something to do with it.
I’m from the UK. We’re used to being led by women. Whether directly through monarchy, such as Elizabeth I and Empress Victoria, or more subtly such as Alexandra of Denmark or even (one could argue) Princess Diana. One could easily argue that the actual ruling was done by others, and perhaps they’re right. However, ultimately, a woman was in charge. And we did pretty well for ourselves out of it.
Hell, take a look at this list (http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0801534.html). You’d be hardpressed to find a place that hasn’t had female leadership, United States aside (and even then, there are some exceptions. Check out Wilma Mankiller, who has an awesome name). Clearly it’s worked before. Germany is currently under the chancellorship of Angela Merkel, and check out how well they’re doing. The only real question is why it doesn’t happen more often.
Come on girls! Let’s get more involved! Let’s take up the call to lead the world into a new girltopia. Let’s follow the examples of these wonderful women and help our sisters achieve true gynarchy. Especially you, American girls. Join the rest of the world and have yourselves a female leader. Just one. Please?
Oh, but be careful who you go with. Take it from us-don’t get a Margaret Thatcher to be in charge of things. Doesn’t end well.
